چکیده

Recent systems on structured prediction focus on increasing the level of structural dependencies within the model. However, our study suggests that complex structures entail high overfitting risks. To control the structure-based overfitting, we propose to conduct structure regularization decoding (SR decoding). The decoding of the complex structure model is regularized by the additionally trained simple structure model. We theoretically analyze the quantitative relations between the structural complexity and the overfitting risk. The analysis shows that complex structure models are prone to the structure-based overfitting. Empirical evaluations show that the proposed method improves the performance of the complex structure models by reducing the structurebased overfitting. On the sequence labeling tasks, the proposed method substantially improves the performance of the complex neural network models. The maximum F1 error rate reduction is 36.4% for the third-order model. The proposed method also works for the parsing task. The maximum UAS improvement is 5.5% for the tri-sibling model. The results are competitive with or better than the state-of-the-art results. 1

Chinese Named Entity Recognition with the Improved Smoothed Conditional Random Fields1

As a kind of state-of-the-art sequence classifier, Conditional Random Fields (CRFs) recently have been widely used for some natural language processing tasks which could be viewed as the sequence labeling problems such as POS tagging, named entity recognition(NER) etc. But CRFs suffer from the failing that they are prone to overfitting when the number of features grows. For NER task, the featur...

Structure Regularization for Structured Prediction

While there are many studies on weight regularization, the study on structure regularization is rare. Many existing systems on structured prediction focus on increasing the level of structural dependencies within the model. However, this trend could have been misdirected, because our study suggests that complex structures are actually harmful to generalization ability in structured prediction. ...

Convolution Kernels with Feature Selection for Natural Language Processing Tasks

Convolution kernels, such as sequence and tree kernels, are advantageous for both the concept and accuracy of many natural language processing (NLP) tasks. Experiments have, however, shown that the over-fitting problem often arises when these kernels are used in NLP tasks. This paper discusses this issue of convolution kernels, and then proposes a new approach based on statistical feature selec...
